How to Wash Your Bras So They Last Twice as Long
A bra that fits properly is not cheap, and most of them die years before they need to. Almost always for the same handful of reasons, and all of them are avoidable.
None of this is precious or complicated. It is mostly about heat.
Heat is the enemy
The stretch in your band comes from elastane. Elastane is a plastic. Heat relaxes it and it does not come back.
So: cool water, always. Thirty degrees or below, or just cold. And never, ever a tumble dryer. One hot cycle can take months off a band. Do it regularly and a bra that should last two years is finished in six months.
The same goes for radiators. Drying a bra draped over a hot radiator is a tumble dryer in slow motion.
Hand washing, without the faff
It takes about four minutes.
Fill a sink with cool water and a small amount of mild detergent. Swirl the bra through, leave it fifteen minutes, squeeze the water through the fabric a few times. Rinse until the water runs clear.
Do not wring it. Twisting distorts the cups and stresses the wire channel. Press the water out between your palms, or lay it in a towel and roll.
If you are going to machine wash anyway
Most people will, and that is fine. Just stack the odds:
- Do the hooks up first, so they do not catch other things
- Use a mesh laundry bag, one bra per bag if you can
- Cool cycle, gentle or delicates
- Never with jeans, towels, or anything with a zip
- Skip fabric softener, it coats elastane and stops it recovering

Drying
Lay it flat, or hang it by the centre gore rather than by a strap. Hanging a wet bra by one strap stretches that strap permanently, and then it never adjusts the same way again.
Reshape the cups with your hands while it is damp. Moulded cups in particular hold whatever shape they dry in.
Rotate them
This is the one that makes the biggest difference and costs nothing. Elastic needs about a day to recover after wearing. If you have three bras in rotation, each one gets two days off and all three last considerably longer than one worn daily.
Two days running in the same bra is the fastest way to stretch a band out.
How long should one last
Worn weekly and cared for, roughly a year to eighteen months. Worn almost daily, expect less.
The tell is the loosest hook. When a bra you used to wear on the loosest hook now needs the tightest, the elastic has given what it has. That is not a failure, it is the end of a normal life. Time to replace it rather than fight it.
One thing worth knowing
You do not need to wash a bra after every wear. Every two or three is fine for most people, unless it has been a hot day or you have been exercising. Washing less, gently, is better for it than washing constantly.
